Bridle Insurance were at Wembley today to cheer on Oxford United as they secured their place back in the Football League after a four-year absence with victory over York City.
Driven on by well over 30,000 U's fans in the rain, they overcame a talented York City side to win 3-1 with goals from top scorers Matt Green and James Constable and substitute Alfie Potter.
The last time Oxford United played at Wembley was twenty four years ago. On that famous day they lifted the Milk Cup with goals from Trevor Hebbard, Ray Houghton and Jeremy Charles in the 3-0 victory over Jim Smith's Queens Park Rangers. Since then, the loyal fans have not had a great deal to cheer about but that all changed today.
Two goals in the space of five first-half minutes put the U's in charge, Matt Green half-volleying them in front from 18 yards with a fantastic finish. James Constable doubled their lead with a powerful left-foot drive. The usually impeccable U's keeper Ryan Clarke fumbled in Ben Purkiss's cross to give York a lifeline only for Alfie Potter to wrap it up.
Congratulations and well played Oxford, we are all very much looking forward to life in the football league again.
